Description
This is a hand made mechanical wood toy that operates with the turn of a crank. As you turn the crank, seven cams rotate on a crank shaft. This alternately lifts the seven wood blocks. Marbles climb along the top of these wood blocks and then roll down a series of ramps. The marbles collect at the bottom and await their turn for their next journey up the wood blocks. This toy is extremely sturdy. I make them out of native Missouri red cedar. I leave the wood
unfinished on purpose. This allows you to enjoy the natural cedar aroma. Cedar is also a natural moth and insect repellant.
I construct the body and base of the marble climber with 2" deck screws. You won't see any, though. They are all countersunk. I cut and glue precision wood plugs to hide the holes, and I sand them flush.
It takes me 7 to 8 hours to construct each marble climber. This is an extreme precision piece of wood working, with tolerances less than 1/8". It requires up to three 8 foot 1" X 6" cedar boards to make one marble climber. You'll find the moving wood blocks have no knots. Knots interfere with the smooth sliding of the wood blocks. Cedar wood is naturally loaded with knots. It takes a lot of board feet of cedar to make one marble climber.
I spend over .00 in materials to make each marble climber.
