Description
What kind of camera did WEEGEE use? A 4x5 Speed Graphic, of course, set to f/16, 1/200th and 10 feet. Always. This is a real-deal wartime Anniversary Speed Graphic with NO chrome - all black - in a home made Army OD Canvas case, hand sewn with whip-stitched edges
Vintage Wartime All Black Anniversary Speed Graphic 4x5 sheet film camera with "fast" Wollensak Velostigmat 5" (127mm) Focus Series II f/4.5 lens in a Betax No. 2 Shutter, Hand stitched field made GI case, and accessories
The camera has a fabricated fixed steel flash bracket attached, and the infinity stops are set WAY in - likely a pre-set for a known short focus, and hinting at use as a
close-in press or forensic (crime scene) camera
(much like Weegee's camera setup)
The Wollensak Velostigmat Series II "for speed work" lens dates to 1941.
The Betax No. 2 Shutter has : T, B, 100, 50, 25, 10, 5 and 2, with half stops between 25 and 10, 10 and 5, and 5
and 2
Has the Graphic type spring back
Two film holders : a standard two sheet holder (wooden) with both dark slides (one dark slide a little oxidized on the pull end) and the infamous Graflex Film pack adapter for the no-longer-available film pack - a good dark slide donor
Also includes an Enteco Combination Lens Hood and Series VII filter holder and two Kodak Wratten Gelatin filters in their original cases, with original padding
The OLIVE DRAB canvas case is hand stitched together from real GI canvas, using the original snaps. Not sure if this indicates any service use (this camera does NOT have a USA Signal Corps stamp or plate) or just resourceful use of surplus.
This camera has NOT been tested with film, but is generally clean and used but not abused. Aperture adjusts smoothly, focus rack is smooth, and the focal plane shutter appears to operate fine. Lens shutter works great - one of the crispest I have seen on these cameras
Overall nice vintage condition. There is definitely visible wear, as this camera was really used. Metal and leather are pretty good, but leather on the back of the ground glass hood needs to be reglued. Some wear at corners. The bellows looks good but may not be light-tight, aperture operates smoothly, focus rack is smooth. Focal plane shutter appears to operate, but has not been timed. Lens shutter works great at all speeds. The Betax #2 is self cocking and fires off perfectly every time. From an estate, unused for 30+ years. Excellent for display, but will probably want a tune up for use. Excellent mechanicals for a rehab.
I am new to this camera and have not used it, but will do my best to answer any questions.
